Suzanne has implemented a structured performance management system and individual professional development plans for clients . She has met regularly with clients to discuss performance and career issues and to provide counselling and coaching on personal and professional aspirations. The old authoritarian ways of managing are now not effective or appropriate. There is much more focus now on coaching, rather than ordering people to perform. We get better productivity by supporting and encouraging people to achieve their objectives or change their behaviour. The key to effective workplace counselling is giving people careful guidance and the freedom to choose the course of action that achieves the workplace goals. People are much more likely to carry out a course of action to which they have committed themselves, because it is their decision and they feel they are responsible for the outcome.
